Amtgard food drive aids Soup Kitchen
Over the past weekend the local Amtgard group held a food drive in conjunction with a nation wide event known as the Amtgard Food Fight. The goal was to raise as much food as possible to donate to a food bank or pantry in an effort to help restock them after the busy summer months and before the busier holiday seasons.
We mostly know Amtgard by the people in funny looking clothes goofing around at City Park on Sundays but, if this week you would have taken a closer look you would have also seen a small mountain of food. Around 1 P.M. people started gathering and by the time the day was wrapping up a total of 208 pounds of food was donated by the members of Dark Oasis to be given to Isiah's Soup Kitchen.
The event was organized on a local level by David Lasater who tallied up the weight as items steadily poured in. 161 items and $50 in cash were donated to the nonprofit, who serves over 3000 hot meals per month to the community, Monday morning. Chad Laster helped boost the donations by donating a prize to a type of raffle, where donations earn an entry to win a pair of decorative sai.
Anyone 14 and over are welcome to join in the fun and festivities of Amtgard by showing up at the city park around 2 P.M. on Sundays. Have fun, meet new people, learn new things and help make Hobbs a better place.
The good people of Dark Oasis would like to thank Dusty Marshall, Tammie VanMarter, and everyone else who helped make this such a success. Local groups such as Isiah's Soup Kitchen use donations received to feed the hungry of the community they serve and by helping them, you help your community.
